Chapter 6

Nick Claussen worked with Mason on a serial killer case. He trusted the man. Since Nick was here on a Christmas vacation, visiting family, he wouldn’t be compelled to respond in any official capacity—unless needed.

Mason had asked Nick to come over to his three bedroom ranch style house to talk in private. He couldn’t afford to let anyone overhear his conversation and talking at church wasn’t an option with Beth working there today. She was helping with the Christmas play.

Beth also mentioned hanging some Christmas lights and putting up her Christmas tree today, which he offered his assistance. He thought it was a clever way to get to see her again, and after doing hers, he could persuade her to help him decorate his tree.

“What are you smiling about?” Nick asked, taking a sip of his coffee. He looked comfortable on Mason’s brown suede couch, having bounced back from this past week’s brush with the stalker.

“I was thinking about Beth.”

“Women have a habit of doing that to us.” Nick chuckled. “You mentioned on the phone you wanted my input. I hope that doesn’t mean you need dating advice?”

“No.” Mason’s eyes widened as he shook his head vehemently. “Actually, what I want to talk about has to be kept in the strictest of confidence.”

“Sure.” Nick’s gaze narrowed. “Do you need me to look into her past or do a background check?”

“Not exactly.” Mason ran a hand through his hair. “She’s in Witness Protection.”

Nick’s eyes lit up at that revelation.

“I’d kind of like to know how much danger she’s in because yesterday, she saw someone messing around her vehicle when we were coming back from delivering toy barrels for church.” Mason sighed. “It was probably just a kid trying to get lug nuts for his vehicle but given that she witnessed her husband get murdered…I want to be safe.”

“Husband?” If it was possible, Nick’s eyes grew even wider.

“Yeah, it came as a surprise to me, too,” Mason admitted. “It sounded like there was trouble in paradise before he was even murdered.”

“How long ago did it happen?” Nick asked. “Can you fill me in on the details, who the suspect is, etc.?”

“Her husband was an accountant for Richard Vogelman—”

Nick let out a low whistle. “I heard about that case and trust me, that guy isn’t anyone you want to mess with.” He shook his head slowly, biting his lower lip.

Mason didn’t like his reaction. “So, she is in danger?”

“Honestly?” When Mason nodded, Nick continued, “We’ve always suspected that he likes to kill his own victims, but we can’t be sure. Anybody they’ve tried to get to flip on him ends up dead and he has an alibi for most of those, so he possibly uses contract hits or has one of his thugs take care of them. We believe he’s got judges and other officials in his pocket.”

“That doesn’t sound good.” Mason felt a knot form in the pit of his stomach.

“It’s not, but if it’s any consolation, what you mentioned about her vehicle doesn’t sound like something he’d have one of his sidekicks do,” Nick said.
